February 19th, 2013 — Data management
On February 28 at 1pm EST I’ll be taking part in a webinar, sponsored by ScaleBase, on strategies for scaling MySQL.
Scalability is one of the primary drivers we’ve seen for database users considering alternatives to traditional relational databases. That could mean adopting an entirely new database for new projects or – more likely for existing applications – looking at various strategies for improving the scalability of an existing database.
During the webinar I will be joined by Doron Levari and Paul Campaniello, both from ScaleBase, which enables applications to scale without disruption to the existing infrastructure. We’ll be discussing, amongst other things:
- Scaling-out your MySQL databases
- New high availability strategies
- Centrally managing a distributed MySQL environment

July 11th, 2012 — Data management
On Wednesday July 18 at 10am PT I’ll be taking part in a webinar in association with Calpont discussing the rise of analytic platforms. Here are the details:
The data management landscape is changing rapidly as users adopt new data management technologies and data-analysis approaches to cope with and exploit the increasing volume, variety and velocity of ‘big data.’ While traditional data warehouses are ideal for predictable queries against structured data, and Hadoop and its peers are optimized for new and unexpected queries against unstructured data, a third class of technologies has emerged that aims to split the difference.
Join 451 Group Research Manager Matt Aslett and Calpont VP of Engineering Bob Wilkinson for this 45 min webinar to learn about:
- How the analytic platform emerged and its place in the data management ecosystem
- Trends in analytic platforms and what to look for when considering one
- Real world use cases of InfiniDB, Calpont’s analytic platform, in telecommunications and online advertising

May 14th, 2012 — Data management
The initial focus of ‘big data’ has been about its increasing volume, velocity and variety — the “three Vs” — with little mention of real world application. Now is the time to get down to business.
On Wednesday, May 30, at 9am PT I’ll be taking part in a webinar with Splunk to discuss real world successes with ‘big data’.
451 Research believes that in order to deliver value from ‘big data’, businesses need to look beyond the nature of the data and re-assess the technologies, processes and policies they use to engage with that data.
I will outline 451 Research’s ‘total data’ concept for delivering business value from ‘big data’, providing examples of how companies are seeking agile new data management technologies, business strategies and analytical approaches to turn the “three Vs” of data into actionable operational intelligence.
I’ll be joined by Sanjay Mehta, Vice President of Product Marketing at Splunk, which was founded specifically to focus on the opportunity of effectively getting value from massive and ever changing amounts of machine-generated data, one of the fastest growing and most complex segments of ‘big data’.
Sanjay will share big data achievements from three Splunk customers, Groupon, Intuit and CenturyLink. Using Splunk, these companies are turning massive volumes of unstructured and semi-structured machine data into powerful insights.

December 7th, 2011 — Data management
Cloud computing and big data are two of the hottest topics in the industry today, which makes cloud databases a particularly hot prospect for 2012. What is a cloud database, however? On Thursday, December 15 at 12:00pm EST I’ll be taking part in a webinar with Karen Tegan Padir, Vice President of Products and Marketing, EnterpriseDB on the subject of cloud computing and true cloud databases.
In this webcast, you’ll get an overview of the current state of cloud database computing, and more specifically the differences between cloud databases and databases in the cloud. I’ll be providing an overview of the functional requirements that separate databases running in the public cloud, and databases that will be used to power private and hybrid clouds.
Then Karen will provide an overview and demonstration of Postgres Plus Cloud Server, which provides DaaS for PostgreSQL databases and went into public beta earlier this week.

On Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 10am PT (6pm GMT) I’ll be taking part in a webinar with DataStax CTO and Apache Cassandra project chair Jonathan Ellis on the subject of Apache Cassandra: Real NoSQL Applications in the Enterprise Today.
The session will shed light on real-world use cases for NoSQL databases by providing case studies from enterprise production users taking advantage of the massively scalable and highly-available architecture of Apache Cassandra.
I’ll be summarising some of the findings from our NoSQL, NewSQL and Beyond research report, and exploring the drivers behind the development and adoption of NoSQL databases – explaining how the failure of existing suppliers to meet the performance, scalability and flexibility needs of large-scale data processing has led to the development and adoption of alternative data management technologies.
Jonathan will provide more detail on Apache Cassandra and DataStax, including a number of real-world projects including Netflix, Backupify, Ooyala and Constant Contact.
You can register for the event here and find more details about our NoSQL, NewSQL and Beyond research report here.

March 3rd, 2011 — Text analysis
On Tuesday March 8 I’m doing a webinar along with Isys Search Software and Sybase about text-aware applications. The full title is “Text-Aware Software Solutions: What Defines Excellence?”
‘Text-aware applications’ is a phrase we coined back in 2005 as part of the process of writing a major report on the subject in which we looked at the various application areas (CRM, ERP, BI etc) that could benefit from a deep understanding of unstructured data.
As the first key finding from the report said:
The future success of companies and organizations will increasingly be based on their ability to unlock hidden intelligence and value from unstructured data, and text in particular.
The webinar on March 8 looks at the role of document filters in making applications text-aware, which is something I’ve talked about here before.
It’s at 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm UK. You can register here.
